The cam belt — also called the timing belt — is one of the most important components in your engine. It synchronises the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring the engine's valves open and close at exactly the right moment. When a cam belt snaps, the engine can sustain catastrophic damage in milliseconds. Yet because it runs inside the engine and is not visible during a routine inspection, many drivers are unaware of their vehicle's replacement interval until it is too late.
What Does a Cam Belt Do?
The cam belt connects the crankshaft (which converts the pistons' up-and-down motion into rotation) to the camshaft (which operates the intake and exhaust valves). These components must rotate in perfect synchronisation — even a few degrees of slippage causes the engine to run poorly, and a snapped belt causes the pistons and valves to collide.
In an interference engine — which most modern petrol and diesel engines are — a snapped cam belt at speed will cause the pistons to strike the open valves. This bends the valves, often damages the pistons, and can crack the cylinder head. Engine replacement or rebuild typically costs £1,500–£5,000 or more. On an older car, this frequently exceeds the vehicle's value.
Cam Belt Replacement Intervals
Every manufacturer specifies a replacement interval for the timing belt, typically expressed as a mileage and/or age limit — whichever comes first. Common intervals include:
- Every 40,000–60,000 miles or 4–5 years (older Ford, Vauxhall, and some VW group engines)
- Every 60,000–80,000 miles or 5–6 years (many modern petrol engines)
- Every 100,000–120,000 miles or 6–8 years (some modern diesel engines)
The age limit is as important as the mileage limit. A low-mileage car that is 7 years old may need its cam belt replaced even though it has only covered 30,000 miles, because the rubber degrades with age regardless of use.
Find your specific interval in the vehicle handbook, or ask your garage to look it up from technical data. Do not rely on online generalisations — intervals vary significantly between engine codes within the same model range.
Cam Belt vs Timing Chain: Does Your Car Have One?
Not all cars use a timing belt. Some use a metal timing chain, which is lubricated by engine oil, does not have a fixed replacement interval, and is expected to last the life of the engine. Common examples of timing chain engines include many BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Honda models, though there are exceptions.
To find out whether your car uses a belt or a chain: check the vehicle handbook (it will reference a timing belt service if one applies), ask your garage, or search using your specific engine code. If your car has a timing chain, you do not need to worry about scheduled cam belt replacement — but note that some chains can stretch or the tensioners can fail on high-mileage examples, which a garage can check during a service.
Cam Belt Replacement Cost
Cam belt replacement is a labour-intensive job, particularly on compact modern engines where access is restricted. Typical UK costs:
- Most family cars (e.g. Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, VW Golf): £250–£450 fitted, including the belt, tensioner, and idler pulleys.
- With water pump replacement: The water pump is usually driven by the cam belt. Replacing both at the same time adds £80–£150 but avoids the risk of a water pump failure requiring the entire job to be repeated. Most garages and manufacturers recommend it.
- Premium and performance vehicles: £500–£1,000+ depending on complexity.
Never delay cam belt replacement to save money. The difference between replacement and a catastrophic engine failure can be thousands of pounds.
